International Standards in Librarianship

In December 2009, an International seminar “Indices of National Libraries Activities” will take place in the National Academic Library of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Russian State Library (RGB), Library Assembly of Eurasia (BAE), National Academic Library of the Republic of Kazakhstan (NABRK), and Library Association of the Republic of Kazakhstan (BARK) are organizers of the forum.

The seminar's aim is to approve standards of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) on practice of national libraries work from CIS countries; this will undoubtedly promote unification of their activities indices, introduction of these indices in system of reporting of libraries from countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States, and raising quality of librarianship in these countries up to world standards.

In connection with integration to global information environment, national libraries of CIS countries need to adapt indices developed by ISO to their activity.

The seminar in Astana is to promote better understanding of international standards in librarianship field, particularly quality evaluation standard of libraries activity.

The seminar programme involves acquaintance of national libraries directors with international standards for evaluation of libraries quality, with experience in indices introduction in national libraries of Russian Federation. Besides, there are planned some studies in indices calculation of using resources and services rendered by library, their efficiency, potential and general library development (on basis of standard ISO/11620:1998).
